March 25, 2009 by Redcat
None of us femmes want to be like the woman we passed on the street the other day; she was wearing so much perfume that you had to stop and take a few deep breaths before continuing on. Don’t worry–it is possible to wear perfume and not induce others around you to wear gas masks. Here are some basic tips to follow when applying perfume, as well as making it last:

• Perfume – The most expensive with the longest staying power.
• Eau de Perfume – Less oil and staying power.
• Eau de Toilette – Suitable for office and work environment provided there’s no allergies or complaints. ![]()
The most popular scent categories include:
• Fresh, natural, green and floral scents
• Fruity, citrus and spicy
• Musk and pheromones
• Oriental
• Classic woodsy scent
• Sporty scents
When using an eau de cologne, eau de toilette, or eau de perfume, spray or dab liberally on the skin. These versions of fragrance are designed to be used all over. Spray in the air and walk into a cloud of scent for an even, head to toe experience!
Perfume, the most concentrated version of scent, is designed to be applied at the pulse points, on the wrists, behind the neck, in the décolleté, behind the ears, or even behind the knees. Your body warmth will radiate your delightful perfume.
When applying a fragrance always remember that less is actually better. This is especially true if you are attending an event where there is apt to be a large number of people. A light spray of fragrance on a pulse point should be all that you need to smell wonderful.
Once you have applied your fragrance to your wrist, do not rub the scent onto your other wrist as this can change the scent of the fragrance a great deal. Your breasts, around the ankles, the sides of the neck, and behind your knees are known as pulse points and is therefore the most ideal place to apply fragrance.
You should always be careful when spraying on a perfume if you wear a watch or bracelet. This is because your fragrance can react to any leather, plastic, or metal that the jewelry is made up of leaving the material dull.
Whether it is a solid, spray, or lotion, apply your perfume before you put on any clothing or jewelry. Some fragrances will leave permanent stains on fabrics, metals, and pearls.
We all know that body heat rises, so apply perfume to the back of your knees to leave a lasting impression.
Only apply fragrance to your hair if it is freshly washed. If not, the natural oil in your hair will change the scent of the perfume. To do so, spray your hair once or twice from a distance of at least 8 inches. Another option is to spray some of the perfume in your hands and then disperse it through your hair. Do not spray your hairbrush or comb; this will leave the scent attached to it and affect any other scents your spray into your hair.
If you have fair or dry skin, your perfume is going to wear off faster than those with oily or darker skin. This simply means that you might need to give yourself one or two sprays of your favorite scent during your lunch break.
One tip that you may find useful when attending an event is to sprit the outside of your hand instead of your wrist. This is a good idea because it will let the fragrance work in an outward direction this will leave your scent light and gentle.
Vary the fragrance that you use from time to time. It has been medically proven that scents have a strong effect on our emotions and mindset. Don’t feel inhibited about trying new and different perfumes every 3-4 months, or along with the changes of the seasons.
Fragrance is made to be used and enjoyed – use it or lose it! For maximum shelf life, store fragrance away from bright sunlight, in a cool, dark area, with the cap tightly secured. Fragrance oils can turn rancid or evaporate if stored improperly.
A tip to remember… Don’t stockpile your perfumes for a special day. Over time, the scent will alter and diminish and you won’t get what you paid for. Enjoy your fragrance today, while it’s in its prime. There are different types of fragrances:

Do choose a fragrance that would be good for you. Different fragrances affect differently on people, so before you go out and buy one that you like on your best friend, make sure you try it out on your own skin and see how your body chemistry reacts to it.- Do research. Enjoying your perfume for long time after is worth spending some time for roaming about shops and trying various fragrances. Citrus, earth, oriental, floral…there are a wide variety of scents on the market. Smell a few different perfumes to get a feel for what you like. Ask the sales clerk to help you choose a perfume by explaining the different notes in the fragrance.
- Do think about what season you will be wearing the perfume. For winter you may want a heavier perfume like a musk versus a lighter citrus scent for summer. You may also want to choose a perfume for evening and a different one for daytime wear.
- Do shop for perfume in the afternoon when your sense of smell is at its peak.
- Do apply perfume to your pulse points for maximum effect. Your pulse points include the inside of your wrists, at the temples, behind the knees, behind the ears, between the ankles, toes and thighs as well as in your cleavage.
- Don’t overdo it. Overpowering smells can make the people around you very uncomfortable and may even cause headaches.
- Don’t spray perfume near pearls or costume jewelry. Because perfume is infused with alcohol it can strip these jewels and remove their coating.
