Are You a Good Friend?

February 25, 2009 by Katerina

We all need friends; they give us feeling of life fullness. But as in any other relationship it takes time and efforts to get real friends. There are simply rules, which will definitely help you to maintain friendship. However, don’t forget the quantity is not important – it is still better to have a few reliable friends, than hundreds of those who take an interest only in your looks or pocket.

When the character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friends.
Japanese Proverb

.

The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed
Carl Jung

.

Do not protect yourself by a fence, but rather by your friends.
Czech Proverb

.

Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.
George Washington

Colours for Home

by Olgita

colorwheelOne of the most important elements in decorating is colour. Valuable tool to use is the colour wheel. Thousands of colour combinations are possible, but you can use basic colour information to create the colour scheme best suited for your home and your personal taste. The steps involved in choosing colours shouldn’t deter you from selecting a certain combination or layout. Always choose the colours you like best for decorating success.

Different colours affect our moods differently. You’ve decided sky blue, your favorite colour, is going to be the main accent in your room. Before you buy enough of emerald green paint, consider the effect it will have on the appearance and mood of the room. Use the following descriptions as guides to create your colour combination:

Warm and Cosy Colours

Warm and cozy colours, located on the right side of our colour wheel, convey a message of togetherness and strength:

* Varying shades of red are commonly found in dining rooms and libraries, but are becoming popular in kitchens and bedrooms as well.
* Pure orange is an extremely warm colour. It’s very hard to tone down and is often used as an accent colour only.
* Yellow has different effects depending upon its tone and value. A sharp yellow can create a feeling of deterrence, as with police tape at a crime scene. But a pale yellow, such as cowslip, can create a bright and pleasing environment.

Cool and Soothing Colours

Cool and soothing colours, located on the left side of our colour wheel, provide a sense of calm and feelings of trust:

* As you may have noticed, most hospitals and doctors’ offices decorate with green. Green is one of nature’s most prominent colours and blends easily with any room.
* Blue is generally a peaceful colour. Light blue can make a room appear bright and refreshing, while a deep blue can create a sober mood. Use blue in any room of the house.
* Violet is getting more and more recognition due to its connection to romance. Violet is also being used in bedrooms and living rooms to communicate an air of serenity.

Pastel Colours

Pastel colours are the result of adding a large amount of white to colours. Because of the lightness of the colour, there’s little concern of clashing. Pastels create a comfortable, airy feeling in any room.

Neutral Colours

Neutral colours include shades of white, gray and black. Neutral colours are the easiest colours to use for one obvious reason; they blend easily with most surroundings. Builders typically use neutral colours on the interior of a home to accommodate the new home owners’ wide range of tastes. Neutral colours can be stylish and dramatic. For instance, black and white are neutral colours that create a wonderful palette for additional colours.

Everyday Care for Eyes

February 24, 2009 by Olgita

For routine eye care:eyes-w-butterfly-black-white

  1. Wash your eyes frequently with clean water. Usually tap water is good enough. Wash them 3 to 4 times a day.
  2. Sit in upright position while reading or writing
  3. Wear proper number spectacles as per doctor’s advice
  4. Do not put any drops or “medicines” in the eye without consulting your eye doctor.
  5. For reading – good diffused tube light – 1.25 ft (15 inches) distance in upright sitting position is advised.
  6. There are no special eye drops to improve the eyesight, or to keep the eyes clean etc.
  7. Regular general exercise, routine square diet, green vegetables, fruits and sprouted pulses can keep the eyes in good condition.
  8. Ophthalmology is a specialised field and any eye problem is better handled by a qualified eye doctor
  9. Children need regular eye check up as number may change more often.
  10. Most people above the age of 40 need reading glasses. Use them and check the number at least once a year. Also get your eye pressure and retina checked regularly.
  11. There is a popular belief that eating carrots or vitamin A tablets reduces spectacle number. This is not correct. Normal intake of vitamin A is essential, but it will not reduce the spectacle number. Avoid taking any medicine without proper medical adviceExcessive consumption of vitamin A may lead to vitamin A toxicity.
  12. If you get headache, watering, redness, – consult your ophthalmologist immediately
  13. Using drops (especially steroid eye drops) without proper advice can cause cataract or glaucoma.

Working with computers:

This matter sometimes causes a lot of anxiety among people. Take the following care to keep your eyes in good condition

  1. Keep the monitor 15 to 20 inches from the eye.
  2. The difference in brightness of the screen and the light in the room should not be much.
  3. Blink your eyes frequently, consciously, to keep them wet.
  4. Every 10 minutes or so, fix your eyes at a distant object for a few seconds.
  5. Use proper number glasses as prescribed by the doctor.
  6. If bifocal glasses do not suit you, use separate unifocal near vision computer friendly glasses while working with computers.
  7. Avoid coloured glasses while working indoors.
  8. Despite taking care, if you get any problems, consult your eye specialist.
  9. Computer per se does not harm eyes.

Watching TV:

  1. Do not strain your eyes by watching TV for too long a time.
  2. Blink often while watching TV.
  3. Do not sit too close.

Drink Fresh and Be Healthy!

February 23, 2009 by Katerina

In our crazy fast world, when it seems there’s never enough time to eat properly, drinking fresh juices can ensure that your body gets the nourishment it needs to stay healthy.

Fresh juices, both fruit and vegetable are a rich, concentrated source of nutrients and give an instant support to your body and mind. The vitamins, minerals and enzymes present in fresh, live juices are absorbed more quickly and efficiently than whole foods that can take several hours to digest. The quick and easy assimilation of fresh juices is due to the presence of live enzymes in raw fruits and vegetables.

Fresh juice provides us with minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids and much more. All of these factors are vital to maintaining good health. That is why, if you make fresh juice a part of your daily diet, you will have increased energy, good spirit, strengthened immune system and a reduced risk of disease.

Sure, there are many bottled fruits and vegetables juices available on the market. However, their valuable nutrients are lost during the bottling process which includes thermal treatment. Making your own juice and drinking it fresh in some minutes, will give you control over the quality of the juice you are consuming as well as control over the quality of your life!

It is never too late to start drinking your favorite fruits and vegetables. Juices can eliminate toxins from your body, they are good for your weight, circulation and overall well being.

.

Carrot juice

carrotjuice1

Carrot juice is one of the richest sources of vitamin A (beta-carotene) that can be used in the daily diet. It also contains B vitamins and its mineral content is equally rich and includes calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, and iron. All this makes carrot juice especially recommended for kids and people with weak immunity, poor eyesight and problem skin.

Vitamin A is very good for sight. However, it is soluble in fat but not in water. Thus, to assimilate vitamin A (beta-carotene) you need to eat some fat right after you drink carrot juice or add some drops of olive oil into your juice.

.

Tomato juice

Tomato juice reduces risk of cancer because of stimulation of alimentary canal work. New medical research also suggests that having lycopene in your diet may help prevent cancer. Lycopene can be found in tomatoes, and is best in a concentrated form or as fresh juice. Tomato juice is low calorie and that’s why overweight people also can drink it. Drink tomato juice 20 minutes before meal, as it increases bowels readiness for food digestion.

By the way, addition of salt reduces juice’s medicinal qualities. Instead of salt you can add pounded garlic and fresh green.

.

Apple juice

400px-apples_medium

Fresh apple juice carries a significant amount of vitamins A and C! It also contains many vitamin P and minerals, such as potassium, calcium, iron salts, copper, manganese, cobalt, zinc, nickel. Pectin from pulpy apple juice normalizes bowels work. High sugar and organic compounds content contributes to quick restoration after physical loads. Compounds in apples and apple juice called phytonutrients act in the same way as red wine and herbal tea; they delay the break down of so called “bad” cholesterol. You can drink apple juice without any damage to your health in rather big quantities – up to four glasses per day.

For the elderly generation, drinking fruit juices should begin with apples, especially if you are suffering from arthritis and rheumatism. This is because apples carry a substantial amount of potassium.

.

Grape juice

Grapes are an excellent source of potassium, which encourages an alkaline blood balance and also stimulates the kidneys and regulates heartbeat. It is recommended while nervous exhaustion and collapse. Juice of dark grape contains substances, reducing risk of heart diseases. Its regular drinking reduces level of cholesterol and arterial pressure.

.

Pomegranate juice

800px-pomegranate02_edit

The pomegranate has a high potential for disease-fighting antioxidants. Pomegranate juice is excellently assimilated, excites appetite, regulates alimentary canal activity and increases haemoglobin. It has diuretic and antiseptic effects. It is also quite high in potassium and fiber, and contains vitamin C and niacin. Pomegranate juice should be diluted with water. It contains many acids, which irritate alimentary canal.

.

Be careful

Many people think fresh juices are surely harmless. However, you should not overestimate medicinal power of juices.

Don’t drink too much carrot juice. Excess of beta-carotene overloads liver and skin can gain sallow tone. Drink no more than two glasses liter of carrot juice per day. Two glasses is enough for your daily diet.

Grape juice consumption should be restricted for full people and sick with diabetes. It contains too much glucose and calories.

Remember, many fresh juices are purgatives. So if you suffer from diarrhea, you should dilute them with water beforehand and drink little by little.

To receive wholesome substances and vitamins from fresh juices, you don’t need to drink liters of them at all. Such experiments can only damage your organism. Reasonable norm – is from several table spoons to 3 glasses per day depending on kind of juice. It’s better to drink juices 20-30 minutes before meal or during breaks between meals.

You need to drink fresh juices right after you prepare them. Even short-term keeping in fridge reduces medicinal value of juice, although its taste can remain the same.

.

Fresh up your life!

You can be very creative in making fresh juice. Look for interesting varieties of fruits as they come to market, vegetables and herbs (like spearmint and lemongrass) and mix them (fruits with fruits, vegetables with vegetables, herbs with either) in new combinations. Use fresh fruit and vegetables, wash and prepare them as appropriate. You can reuse fruit pulp in cakes and muffins, and add vegetable pulp to soups.

.

Pineapple & mint juice

1 pineapple

5 sprigs fresh mint leaves

.

Pear, pineapple & apple

2 pears

1 small pineapple

2 green apples

.

Orange, lemon & strawberry juice

2 oranges

1 lemon

1 cup strawberries.

013As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, holiday joy can turn into sadness during winter. A decrease in exposure to sunlight can bring on mild depression, otherwise known as the winter blues.

.

Winter sleep-wake cycles often have us waking up after the morning sun has been up for a while. This limits the amount of already limited sunlit hours that we are exposed to during the day. These fluctuations in the sleep-wake cycles create an increase in melatonin levels during sleep, which can increase feelings of depression.

.

The lack of exposure to light also contributes to a decrease in serotonin levels, which also leads to depression. Cases of severe winter depression are known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which often requires treatment by a doctor or psychologist.

.

Do you have the winter blues?

.

According to Cornell University, these are the symptoms you should look for when determining whether or not you suffer from the winter blues:

.

There are numerous natural tips to help you cope with the winter blues:

.

1. Take advantage of the sunlight

Try to get out in the sun, or let it shine through your windows as much as possible. Try using sheer curtains instead of blinds. If possible, go to bed earlier so that you can wake up earlier to get more of that morning sun.

.

2. Use a light box

Light boxes mimic natural sunlight by emitting 10 to 20 times the amount of light emitted by a normal light fixture. Use daily, preferably in the early morning for about 30 minutes to 2 hours. This high intensity of light helps to restrict the amount of melatonin produced by the brain, and thus decrease feelings of depression.

.

3. Add some color to your home

023You might see the blues and greys of the winter landscape as being cold, drab, and depressing. Liven up your home with splashes of warm colors, such as reds, oranges, yellows… Instead of taking on any major redecorating, just add some warm-colored pillows, blankets, candles, tablecloths, etc. These colors evoke feelings of warmth and fire. And by all means, if you have a fireplace — use it!

.

4. Exercise

Exercise is a natural way to increase serotonin levels. Studies have shown that one hour of aerobic exercise has the same uplifting effects as two and a half hours of indoor light therapy. You can also try doing regular stretching, as it will help you to reduce and manage stress, along with improve your mental clarity and focus. As with exercise, proper form in stretching has everything to do with achieving the maximum health benefits. We highly recommend the Stretching Toward a Healthier Life DVD for this purpose.

.

0315. Modify your diet

Carbohydrates have been shown to increase serotonin levels. To treat your body right, indulge in larger portions of complex carbohydrates, such as whole-grain pasta and brown rice. Try eating healthy simple carbohydrates, like fruit, in place of high-sugar foods. Sugary foods may provide momentary relief, but will ultimately exhaust the body and make the body more susceptible to illness.

.

According to experts at Cornell University, 85% of people with the winter blues can eradicate the symptoms with these various types of natural therapy. So if you’re feeling blue, try some of these natural tips to help you get those clouds to part!

positive_thinkingThere are times when we must go through negative situations. Maybe people say something negative about us, or they show rejection or even resentment against us. In such situations, it may be difficult to stay positive. We may be inclined to react negatively to them. That won’t do us any good though; doing so will just make the situation worse. People may behave even more negatively to us. Our day would be filled with anger and disappointment. At the end, nobody wins.

Though it’s not easy, it’s important to stay positive in negative situations. Beat the negative situations by staying positive. Here are 15 tips on how to do it; pick the ones that work for you:

  1. Never respond when you are not calm. If you are not sure that you are calm, don’t respond. Take time to calm yourself down first.
  2. Take a deep breath as a first step to calm yourself down.
  3. Speak in gentle tone to reduce the tension of the situation.
  4. Realize that you can find opportunities in negative situations. Albert Einstein said: “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.”
  5. Look at the content of what people say to you for something positive that you can act upon to improve yourself. Don’t just reject the whole messages.
  6. For the rest of the messages which is negative, simply ignore it.
  7. Maintain positive view of the people. Maybe you don’t like their messages or behavior, but that doesn’t mean that you can hate them personally.
  8. Realize that having negative feelings will just hurt you, not them. So there is no reason for you to have any negative feeling.
  9. If you make mistakes, be open to admit it.
  10. If you make mistakes, remember this quote by George Bernard Shaw: “A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.”
  11. If you can, listen to motivational audio program to feed positive thoughts into your mind.
  12. Talk to a positive friend who can encourage you.
  13. Remember your favorite quotes to give you inspiration and motivation. This is one reason why you should have quote of the day.
  14. Look at the negative situations as your training sessions for real life. The higher you climb in life, the worse the negative situations would be, so you’d better be prepared for them.
  15. Realize that you can’t please everyone. In fact, nobody can. Sometimes you need to just let some people go. Realizing this will relieve you from a lot of unnecessary burden so that you can focus on the people that you can positively interact with.

Many definitions of leadership mention that leader is the one who has followers, the one who leads the others. This ability to unite people, to make them see the goal and work together for its achievement is most reliably based on the discipline of the leader himself. Discipline is another term that would need some explanation and disclosure.

.

So how would you define discipline?

.
MSN Encarta gives such a definition of discipline: “mental self-control used in directing or changing behavior, learning something, or training for something.”
.
Meriam Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character.”
.

Discipline of a leader, besides all above-mentioned, includes also the ability to structure space, to create desire for growth and development, to share willingnessto be responsible for all the actions and results obtained. Discipline should be protected by the leader. You can jugde how disciplined the leader is by a number of obvious factors:

Without discipline there is no leadership.

leadership

.

There are many miracles in this world, and I believe one of them is the ability of one person lead millions of others, inflame people with some idea, generate and distroy communities, bring in deep existential sense into lives of people. I mean the phenomenon of leadership. It was and is used to the good or bad of these other people. It is one of the biggest misteries of humanity. It has been constantly studied and analyzed by greatest minds since the time being. So what is leadership? How can we define it? How can we see it? How can we learn to be leaders? These and many other questions I would like to review in the set of articles about leadership.

.

Leadership is one of the most salient aspects of the organizational context. However, defining leadership has been challenging. There is a number of theories, which explain leadership in various ways, but mostly, I’d say, they highlight various aspects of the same phenomenon.

.

Leadership has been described as the “process of social influence in which one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. A definition more inclusive of followers comes from Alan Keith of Genentech who said “Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen.”

.

Let’s have a look at couple of other definitions:

In the article “What Is Leadership?” Nina Simosko, Global Chief Operating Officer for the worldwide SAP Education organization, ponders over factors that make a person a leader. Funny, but neither perfect education, nor working experience, nor cooperation with other leaders, not even inborn personal traits would make you a leader. There are countless examples of those that perhaps lacked one or more of the supposedly ‘necessary’ leadership traits, but still rose to tremendous success. One example, set by Ms.Simosko, is Joseph Moglia, Chairman of TD Ameritrade. From humble roots, he continued to strive for better and higher goals, achieving great things throughout his career. Joe attributes his success to “an ability to get inside the hearts and minds of your people, having them pull together for a common cause.”

.

Being a leader you tie some people together with a prominent idea. They say that a leader without followers is not a leader, but derilict. But a leader without an idea, without unitive phylosophy is not a leader either. What else can influence the volume of power and longevity of a leader? Let’s talk about it next time!

Together with her twin sister Ashley, Mary-Kate presented a book about fashion and style. Olsen twins are very active and successful. However Mary-Kate is mostly known for her specific way of dressing. Here are some features of Bohemian style from Mary-Kate Olsen.

mksheermk_chanelsun

• Skinny jeans in darker denims or leggings. It can be black, grey, navy or dark blue color.
• Floor length dresses. With belt on her waist or without it. Mary-Kate loves to wear them on a red carpet.
• Leather. Jacket, coat or skinny jeans paired with round glasses make her looks like a rock star.
• Fur. It can be coat or west or just fur. Mary-Kate pairs it with everything – from long t-shirt to evening dress. For this reason she is an enemy for Green Piece.
• Scarves with casual and dressy outfits. They can be light and flowing, dark or in a bright color. Bright scarves add a splash of color to darker outfit.

mk_scarves
• Vintage, vintage-inspired and retro jewelry. Multiple bracelets and oversized stoned rings are favorite accessories of Mary-Kate. Also she loves broaches, pendant necklaces and vintage earrings.
• Extremely high heels and platforms. Even on them Mary-Kate looks very petite.
It’s obvious that most of her evening shoes are much bigger than she needs. In one interview Mary-Kate sais that most of the stores don’t have her size.
• Oversized bag or big purse. She is often seen either with a huge bag or with a big purse carrying “all she needs” in her arms (Keys, cell phone, and of course her favorite Starbucks)
• Half-face sunglasses. As a true star Mary-Kate wears her round black sunglasses almost everywhere.
• Black eyeliner. She uses lots of black eyeliner for a make-up. We notice it every time when we see her without sunglasses.
• Almost white or cherry red lips. Probably it depends on the event and on her mood.
marykate_olsen_casualgrey2 • Classic red or black short nails. They are good with any outfit.• Something in darker colors such as blacks and grays and in neutral tones such as tans and beiges. It makes her look much more mature and sophisticated.• Several layers. Baggy layers, like wrap dresses, flowing skirts and shawls make her look more bohemian.

• Windy hair. It’s very natural. Sometimes she does her hair up or wears hair band.

Her clothes are a mix of rock star and hippie styles with a touch of retro. Often combining designer wear with second-hand thrift store goods Mary-Kate has a fresh and easy outfit. Lots of stars keep trying to copy her style, but nobody is really successful.

If You Need Another Mood, Change the Color

February 18, 2009 by Redcat

colorsWhile most of us may not spend a lot of time thinking about room color, it affects every day of our lives. Room color can influence our mood and our thoughts.
To have a beautiful home, you do not have to worry about trends. Color trends will come and go. The people who live in a home make it beautiful by choosing colors that reflect their likes and their personalities. The trick is to blend those colors you like into a pleasing combination.
When selecting color for a room, keep in mind that each color has a psychological value. Think about how those colors make you feel. Below are some emotional associations that humans tend to have with certain colors. These are important to keep in mind in order to create the mood you are seeking.
Colors in the red, orange and yellow families are referred to as “warm” colors since they evoke images associated with heat, like fire or sunshine. As a result they make us feel warm in a psychological sense.
Red raises a room’s energy level. It’s a good choice when you want to stir up excitement, particularly at night. In the living room or dining room, red draws people together and stimulates conversation. In an entryway, it creates a strong first impression. Red has been shown to raise blood pressure, speed respiration and heart rate. Unlike pink, red is associated with adult sexuality and passion. This is seen in the archetype “Lady in Red” and “The Scarlet Letter”.
In China red symbolizes celebration and luck, used in many cultural ceremonies that range from funerals to weddings. In India red is the color of purity (used in wedding outfits).
Orange is an energetic color. This color is great for an exercise room. It brings enthusiasm and excitement.
Orange brings up memories of pumpkins and Halloween. In ancient cultures orange was used to heal the lungs and increase energy levels. It has been used for attention-getting purposes, such as on caution signs.
Pink (can be cool or warm) is associated with youth and femininity. It is a “young” color represents blushing and flower petals. It is often seen in the form of prom and young bridesmaid’s dresses and signals budding female sexuality. It is meant to set a romantic mood. The bedroom can be made in a pink. But not the neon pink.

Yellow captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness. It’s perfect for kitchens, dining rooms, and bathrooms. However, we should be careful with yellow, because it is the most fatiguing on the eyes. It tends to create feeling of frustration and anger in people.
However, for the most part, as the popular song commutates, yellow sets a mellow mood. The yellow rose is a symbol of friendship, less passionate or threatening than red ones. In Asia yellow is sacred, and imperial.
Blues, greens, violets and their intermediates are considered cool colors because of their references to pastoral landscapes and ocean vistas. When we look at these colors they elicit feelings of peace, tranquility and relaxation.
Blue is often recommended for bedrooms and bathrooms. The color represents peaceful things such as clear blue ocean and blue sky. It’s calming and relaxing. The color brings down blood pressure and slows respiration and heart rate. The lighter shades of blue will give you calming effect. However if you opt for a light blue as the primary color in a room, balance it with warm hues in the furnishings and fabrics.

Blue is considered a business color because it reflects reliability. In China, blue is associated with immortality. For Hindus blue is the color of Krishna. For the Jews, blue symbolizes holiness. In the Middle East blue is a protective color.
Green is considered the most restful color for the eye. Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow, green is suited to almost any room in the house. Either it cools things down or has enough warmth for comfort and togetherness. It can be relaxing, calming and pleasant.
In China, green hats mean a man’s wife is cheating on him; it is not a good color for packaging. In India green is the color of Islam. In some tropical countries green is associated with danger.
Purple is associated with luxury as well as creativity. It gives a scheme depth. Lighter versions of purple, such as lavender, bring calming and restful effect.
Black represents power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, elegance, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, anonymity, unhappiness, depth, style, evil, sadness, remorse, anger, underground, good technical color, mourning and death. This color sets a mood of dark enchantment. Usually we don’t use black as a main room color. It’s too heavy for this purpose. However black is great for details. It gives depth to the interior.
White is what we see when all colors come together in perfect balance. It is the color of bridal gowns and angels. It represents reverence, purity, simplicity, cleanliness, peace, humility, precision, innocence, youth, birth, winter, snow, good, sterility, and marriage.
We use white in figures of speech like “pure as the driven snow” or “a white lie.”In Japan, white carnations signify death. In eastern cultures white symbolizes coldness and sterility.
These general guidelines are a good starting point in your search for a paint color. But remember that color choice is a very personal matter. You’re the one who has to live with your new paint color, so choose a hue that suits you, your family and your lifestyle.
