Summer fun gives way to wintry winds and before you realize it you’ve got dry skin – chapped lips, itchy elbows, or a T-zone crying out for help!

Have no fear, these simple winter skin care tips can help you prevent – and treat – dry, chapped skin. And keep you smiling, all season long.

Winter Skin Care Tip 1: Shorten Those Showers

Long, steamy showers may soothe a weekend warrior’s sore muscles, but they’re also good at dehydrating you – yes, taking moisture out instead of putting it in. That’s because hot water removes the skin’s natural oils more quickly than warm or cold water.

The skin care solution? Take shorter showers and baths and use warm water instead of steamy hot. Then, when you’re done, pat dry, don’t rub.

Winter Skin Care Tip 2: Mild Soaps

Your favorite antibacterial or deodorant soap may be doing you more harm than good, stripping your skin of essential oils. That’s why skin care pros recommend sticking with mild soaps, preferably unscented or lightly scented.

You may want to go mild with your laundry detergent, too. Designed to remove dirt and oils, residue just may irritate sensitive, chapped skin. Some recommend Dreft or Ivory Snow.

Winter Skin Care Tip 3: Moisturize

A great way to soothe or prevent chapped skin: moisturize. And you don’t need expensive elixirs from the cosmetics counter to keep skin dewy.

Petroleum jelly, mineral oil, even hair conditioner can help you trap in moisture as you step from the shower or bath. If your skin is oily you still need to moisturize — just look for noncomedogenic products, which won’t clog your pores. And remember to drink up — moisturizing from the inside out.

Winter Skin Care Tip 4: Get Sharp About Shaving

Shaving can leave your skin extra irritated, especially when it’s already dry. So get sharp about shaving by:

* Use a lubricant when you shave, such as shaving cream.
* Change the blades in your shaver often.
* Shave in the direction that hair grows.

Winter Skin Care Tip 5: Slather on Sunscreen

Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, snow, and fog. Over time that exposure can lead to moles, wrinkles, and skin cancers.

So protect your skin: Even on cloudy or overcast days slap on that sunscreen. Reach for a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, with UVA and UVB protection. And don’t forget to reapply often.

Winter Skin Care Tip 6: Soothing Chapped Lips

Lips don’t have oil glands, so they can dry out especially easily. Give your lips the love they need with these suggestions from the American Academy of Dermatology:

* Don’t lick. The cycle of wetting and drying that occurs when you lick your lips quickly causes them to chap.
* Cover up. On cold or windy days protect your kisser behind a scarf.
* Boost moisture. Keep the air in your house moist with a humidifier.
* Lip balm. Sun exposure can make chapped lips even worse, so spread on plenty of lip balm with a sunscreen of SPF 15 or more in it.

These quick skin care tips should help keep your skin happy all winter long. But if you find you still have dry skin, or your skin gets worse, give a dermatologist a call.

New Laws Of Fashion Part 1

October 27, 2008 by Mimi

With more quality available to the American man than ever before, there are also more pitfalls. To help you navigate our expanding sartorial world, here are Esquire’s fifty new laws of fashion. Commit them to memory. Break them if you like. (We’ll tell you how.) Then go undaunted.

1. YOU WEAR THE CLOTHES, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

2. INVESTING IN QUALITY OFTEN MEANS INVESTING IN THE THINGS YOU CAN’T SEE. Like the movement inside a mechanical watch, the full hand-canvasing in a jacket or single breasted suits, or the hand-stitched uppers of your shoes.

3. BLUE JEANS ARE GOOD; DARK-BLUE JEANS ARE BETTER. Leave the boot cuts to cowgirls and black denim to ex-cons.

4. CELEBRITIES LOOK GOOD IN CLOTHES FOR TWO REASONS: a) They’re famous. b) They have someone whose full-time job is to dress them. Don’t get discouraged. Get famous.

5. YOU SHOULD DRESS FOR AIR TRAVEL AS IF IT WERE STILL A PRIVILEGE. Start with a collared shirt and a tailored jacket. And if you can’t bear wearing proper shoes, low-key leather sneakers will do. Ditch the sweatpants, though. You’re not at the gym. How to break it: Flying private gives you sartorial carte blanche.

6. A WELL MADE AND PROPERLY KEPT SHOE WILL LAST YOU THREE DECADES. When shopping for your feet, remember to invest in leather soles and uppers and Goodyear-worthy welts. Remember, too, that all-leather shoes are easier to rebuild. How to break it: If it’s obvious that your loafers are from the seventies, retire them.

7. WOODEN SHOE TREES ARE A GOOD IDEA. But you need only one pair. Put them in the shoes you’ve been wearing all day. The shoe, warmed and wet from your body heat and perspiration, will contract as it cools over the shape of the tree and return to its original form. Within an hour or two, the tree has done its job. Leather Tramezza shoes (made to measure, starting at $810) by Salvatore Ferragamo.

8. THERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU SHOULD STORE YOUR TIE: 1) Lay it flat in a drawer. 2) Roll it up like a Swiss roll by folding it once and then rolling it from the narrow end. Both methods allow the tie to settle and regain its shape overnight.

9. BROADEN YOUR COLOR WHEEL. Colors that real men actually look good in, though they don’t realize it (one item of clothing at a time, please): pink, turquoise, and coral.

10. IT’S BETTER TO BE OVERDRESSED THAN UNDERDRESSED. Being thought eccentric for wearing a tux to a swim meet is preferable to wearing a T-shirt and jeans to a wedding.

12. IN YOUR MEDICINE CABINET: one razor, one bar of shaving soap, a shaving brush, a comb, deodorant, nail clippers, hair gel, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. Done.

13. BUY THE SUIT THAT FITS, NOT THE ONE YOU WISH YOU COULD FIT INTO. A suit that’s too tight will make you look fat. And while an oversized suit may seem more comfortable, in reality you’ll just look like a ten-year-old playing dress-up. In between the two is the suit that fits.

14. WOMEN ARE SEXY WHEN WEARING ONE ITEM OF MEN’S CLOTHING. How to break it: Or nothing at all.

15. WATERPROOF AND WATER-RESISTANT: There’s a big difference.

16. WET SHOES SHOULD BE DRIED IN A WARM PLACE NEAR AN OVEN (BUT NEVER IN ONE). But be careful: Rapid drying can irreversibly crack the leather.

17. “A WELL-TIED TIE IS THE FIRST SERIOUS STEP IN LIFE.” —OSCAR WILDE

18. BE SUSPICIOUS OF THE GUY IN THE STATE U. SWEATSHIRT. Varsity sweatshirts are usually worn by people on whom the educational establishment in question had no lasting or useful impact at all or by people who paid for their kids to go there and would dearly like to advertise the fact. How to break it: Let go of suspicion if you live within twenty miles of a Big Ten school.

19. YOUR EYEGLASSES SHOULD CONTRAST, NOT MIMIC, THE SHAPE OF YOUR FACE. Here’s a quick guide, courtesy of renowned eyeglass designer Richard Morgenthal.

Your shape: Heart
Your specs: A heart-shaped face already has a lot of definition. Since your head is top-heavy, go for a geometric frame that gives some width to the lower half of your face.

Your shape: Square
Your specs: Since a square face already has angles, go for a round or oval frame that shapes your cheekbones. A decorative frame with width will often do the trick.

Your shape: Round
Your specs: Avoid dark frames; they only make your face appear heavy. A round face needs direction, so opt for angular and narrow frames—never a square or a circle.

Your shape: Oval
Your specs: A modern rectangle is best for an oval face. Because your face is longer than it is wide, you’ll need frames that provide width. If your face is wider than it is long, go the opposite way.

20. IN THE NEW JEANS-AND-A-SUIT-JACKET ENVIRONMENT, A POCKET SQUARE CAN STAND IN FOR A TIE. Here’s how.

Astaire: To be done only with a silk handkerchief. Begin by spreading the material across a flat surface and pinching at the center, allowing the fabric to pillow around the pinch. Only an elegant pattern will do.

Churchill: Constructed in the same fashion as the Astaire pocket square but with the additional step of folding up the corners. This style is slightly more ragged in a very purposeful way. Must still be done with silk.

JFK: The structured nature of this style can be done with almost any material: silk, linen, or cotton. Very measured and exact, it calls for a quiet pattern on the hankie and is usually worn by men you’d trust to invest your money.

Bond, James: Straight out of the 1960s comes this straight-across approach. Donned by spies, news anchors, and heads of state, this style is simple and clean. It should be done with a white linen or cotton handkerchief.

Hairstyle

by Olgita

While selecting your hairstyle, there are a few principles to remember. They can help you to choose a style that is more becoming for you.

Hair designers are often asked questions about head shapes and their proportions to hairstyling. Keeping in mind the below mentioned relationship to body height and styles, the following considerations can give the illusion of the classic oval shape face.

Generally, height or fullness is added to area that fall short. Closeness is created where the arc is extended. In this manner, a balanced look is achieved. It is important to increase or decrease the right amount of hair needed to create the proper hair-face relationship and to adapt the hairstyle to the general shape.

Style and Balance – Keep in mind that the normal proportion of head size to total height is measured at 7 1/2 heads of height. Regardless of height, the head can be put in proportion with the body by controlling the size of the head form. Whatever the fashion mode of the day, hair should reflect its proper proportion in relationship to the body. To achieve the proper form, consideration must be given to the density, texture, and weight of the hair and the process it must undergo.

Some more tips to wake up early

October 25, 2008 by Olgita

Working on changing my schedule and the time I get up, I stumbled upon one more resource with some tips how to do so.

1. Wake up 15 minutes earlier every day. The most consistent way to wake up earlier is to slowly change your schedule, 15 minutes or less at a time. If you make too drastic of a change, you will feel tired throughout the day. Also, overestimate a bit, just in case you need to sleep in 20 minutes on a certain day.

2. If you have to wake up early for something, don’t return to your old sleeping schedule. Use a disruption like this to make a drastic and quick change to your routine. An example would be if you must wake up at 4am for a flight, or if the phone rings at 5am one morning. Don’t just return to your regular time the next day, try to embrace the disruption slightly.

3. Don’t sleep in more than 1.5 hrs on weekends. Weekends can really through off your sleep schedule. You will probably find you’re making the most progress on Friday, but then the weekend comes, and you sleep in. Don’t sleep in ridiculously long, because you will just be more tired when you wake up on Monday.

4. Put your alarm just out of reach from your bed. I have noticed that when I am really tired, I will actually turn my alarm clock off in my sleep. Sometimes I remember it slightly, and sometimes I have no idea. My point is, keep the alarm clock out of reach, just in case you try to turn it off unconsciously.

5. Try to make yourself tired earlier at night. You should only go to bed when you feel tired. That said, try exercising after work/school to make yourself more tired during the evening.

Herbal tea

October 24, 2008 by Olgita

Herbal teas have been around almost as long as humans have had access to hot water and herbs, which has been a rather long time. Tea has been known in places like China for centuries, and archaeologists believe that even prehistoric man made teas for drinking and soothing ailments.

It is also clear that the uses of water infused with herbs have long been known in tribal cultures around the world, and have been handed down throughout the generations in almost every society. Herbal teas have traditionally held a very important place in natural medicine, before science was able to diagnose and treat with antibiotics and other modern methods. Those who had the knowledge of herbs and how to make herbal teas were highly respected, as their teas had the ability to greatly aid those who suffered from various ailments.

Herbal teas are still very useful today, especially for people who want to limit their chemical intake, and enjoy nature’s methods of healing.

From sleeplessness, to period pain, to detoxify the body and help clear the mind, herbal teas have multiple uses. You’d be surprised what effects even common herbs can have on your body. For example, the nettle plant is known to have a positive effect on the bones, skin, nails, and hair. Parsley can help if you’re bloating or retaining water, and peppermint is an excellent aid to the digestion.

It is not just ailments of the body that herbal teas can help with, but some are also excellent for the mind. If you are feeling stressed, a tea made from chamomile and rosehips can help you to feel more relaxed. There are also teas containing the herb valerian, which can help you to sleep. Herbal teas can even aid with weight loss. An infusion of blackberry leaves, myrtle leaves, sage, juniper berry and nettle leaves can help you flush your system and control the urges to snack and eat all the time.

Of course, herbal teas are no substitute for medical attention. You should never try and use an herbal remedy when you are seriously sick. Most practitioners agree that herbal teas are an excellent supplement to treatment, and a great preventative, but they will not cure your ills alone. You should also exercise caution when trying new herbal teas, as some people are allergic to certain herbs, and you may have a nasty reaction.

Apart from these common sense measures, you should feel free to enjoy the great tastes and positive effects that herbal teas have. Try blending your own if you’re feeling adventurous, or purchase some from the health store. Many experts believe that herbal teas are best made from loose tea leaves, but there is certainly nothing wrong with using herbal tea bags if the convenience suits you better.

Drinking herbal tea is an excellent way to maintain your health, experience new tastes, and be part of a legacy that has stretched throughout human history.

Perfect Cup of Coffee to Wake Up…

October 23, 2008 by Olgita

When you are cooking you know that using the best ingredients and the best pots and pans can help you to cook the most delicious meals and when you are used to good quality products it has to expand to other things, like the beverages you drink and certainly the coffee that you drink. With coffee it is in fact the same as with cooking, if you want a great tasting coffee you need the best beans (the ingredients) and the best coffee maker (the pots and pans) and when you have that, you can make the best coffee ever.

For that perfect cup of coffee, when you first wake up in the morning, you need to find the best beans that is not that hard especially when you buy and look for it online. Just sample and taste the different kinds of coffee and buy the one that you like. But you also need the best coffee maker and that can be a bit harder.

Finding the right beans is a bit subjective, the beans need to fit your taste. Well with the best coffee maker it is in fact the same way, it is also very subjective. It all depends on your taste, lifestyle, budget and eye for design. People make different choices and that is a good thing, it would be a very boring world if we all prefer the same. There are however common grounds on which we decide what would be the best coffee maker for us.

Pure simple coffee

For the purist among us the best coffee maker ever made is a French press. According to them this kind of coffee is pure and all other coffee makers are just fancy. It is true that coffee made with a French press is rich in flavor, you can buy it anywhere and it does not break easily in fact it is just a glass jar with a plunger. You just need to put the (freshly grinded) coffee grounds in the jar and fill it further with hot boiling water. After that you need to give the brew a couple of minutes to get ready and then push the plunger down. This way you will get a strong concentrated flavor and if that is exactly what you like, you do not have to look any further this is the best coffee maker for you. It does not cost much and you can try out some gourmet coffee beans to experiment with this pure strong flavored coffee.

Coffee makers for the everyday user

If you drink a lot of coffee a French press is probably not a good choice for you. There are many other choices but we would like to bring the common coffee drip brewers at your attentions, because it is not fashionable any more to like these kind of machines while they in fact are the best coffee makers available. It is not just coincidental that these kind of coffee makers are used in almost all office pantries. These machines are reliable and can make a real good cup of coffee.

You need to look around for the more expensive models that have paid attention to details like the temperature and the amount of water used. If you buy a coffee drip brewer you do not want the ones that makes a lot of coffee at one time and keeps it heated in the carafe for a long time. The first cup is good but the last few cups taste awful.

What type of machine you buy is totally up to your taste, just make sure that you buy the best coffee maker of its kind and the best beans you can get.

Perfect Hands

October 22, 2008 by Olgita

The key to keeping the hands looking younger is to moisturize daily, if possible after every hand washing because the combination of the lack of sebaceous glands and constant use can cause peeling and cracking of the skin, and nothing is less attractive than peeling skin. Eventually as well, the hands will become permanently wrinkled and look old. Try to protect hands from the sun and keep them dry as water left on the skin will evaporate and further dry the skin out. A hand massage is also recommended as often as possible. It is relaxing, and increases the circulation that could help in eliminating little aches and pains that may be due to overuse and abuse. This can be done after washing or bathing, every night before going to bed or after particularly strenuous activity. Use a light moisturizer every time. For really rough, coarse skin, slather on generous amounts of moisturizing cream and slip on a pair of cotton gloves before going to bed.

For a little extra pampering, it may be a good idea to treat your hands to an herbal or oil batch using an infusion of chamomile or sage in one quart of water. Soak hands for about 20 minutes then dry thoroughly before applying a rich moisturizer, such as a mixture of one teaspoon of honey and 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add 1 tbsp of the herbal infusion and apply to the hands.
When skin tone is a bit blotchy, try rubbing some lemon on the skin to even it out. Keep your hands warm for overall health. When doing dishes, the laundry or any activity that will damage hands and nails such as gardening, wear rubber gloves lined with cotton. After washing the hands, pat dry and apply a lactic acid-based moisturizer to bind water to the skin more effectively.

Part of the hand that is given some attention is the nails but a manicure should be used in moderation because over-application of nail polish may stain and dry nails. Also ensure that the implements used are clean and free from bacteria to prevent an infection. Avoid sharp angles when shaping the nails and file only in one direction using a fine file. A manicure once weekly is recommended. Be on the look out for signs of disease such as thickening of the nail (fungal infection), pitting (psoriasis) or separation from the nail bed (thyroid deficiency). Nice hands are a sign not only of youth, but hygiene and a healthy lifestyle. It takes just a little bit of effort and cultivation of certain habits to make it a breeze.

In your personal life, when attending to business or working on side projects, how often do you spend 8 consecutive hours in front of a computer? It doesn’t make sense because we lose the ability to concentrate effectively within a few hours.

Everyone goes through alternating periods of high and low mental acuity. There are days when I work on personal projects for well over 8 hours, but the time is always divided into multiple sessions. I might spend a few hours coding a design, a few hours writing, and a few hours reading feeds, moderating comments, and responding to email.

I work this way because it aligns with my mental energy cycle. Any more than 3 hours in front of a computer and my eyes start hurting and I become restless. I lose the ability to do my best work. Instead of forcing myself to continue, I switch to an activity that allows my mind to recharge. These breaks maximize productivity by eliminating down periods. It’s counter productive to force work when the mental energy isn’t there.

The Problem with an 8 Hour Work Day

A continuous 8 hour work day is a relic of the past. It makes sense for physical labor and manufacturing work, but with information workers it doesn’t account for the mental energy cycle. The ability of a factory worker to think analytically is irrelevant, he’s either cranking widgets or he isn’t.

In the case of the modern information worker, nearly all tasks involve creative or strategic thinking. The way someone answers an email or interprets a piece of information can differ drastically depending on his or her energy level. Nobody does their best work 5:30 in the afternoon after they’ve been sucking down coffee all day to stay awake.

I can’t speak for all workers, but I’ve observed that productivity levels generally peak twice a day — first thing in the morning and shortly after lunch. The most productive period is the beginning of the day. People are capable of creative tasks like writing and solving complex technical problems. After a couple hours of intense work, energy levels drop and workers downgrade to less demanding tasks like responding to email and tinkering with existing creations. Towards the end of the cycle, the mind is so cluttered and drained that workers resort to “work related activities” that appear productive but don’t contribute to the bottom line. The afternoon cycle is similar but the productivity peak isn’t as high. For different people the peaks and valleys will vary, but overall I’d estimate only 3-4 hours a day could be classified as highly productive.

This number isn’t caused by slacking. You can’t force an information worker to be highly productive when the energy isn’t there. Workers can try their hardest, but the work just won’t have that creative edge. The low ratio of highly productive hours to total hours worked is the result of the continuous 8 hour work day.

When workers reach the low energy part of the cycle, they can’t recharge with a non-work activity. The only option is office purgatory. You can’t be highly productive because you’re mentally fatigued, but you can’t recharge because the 8 hour work day requires the appearance of constant productivity. The result is millions of unproductive workers trapped at their desks when they’d rather be doing something else.

Alternative Work Arrangements

The obvious solution to this problem is planning around the mental energy cycle by breaking the work day into multiple segments. The traditional office setting doesn’t accommodate this because there are few available recharge activities. People can’t do household chores, run errands, or engage in recreational activities without leaving the workplace.

Some companies have tried to make the work environment more accommodating by offering meals, fitness centers, and special areas for relaxation. Although these amenities are certainly an improvement, they’re expensive for employers and only partially satisfy employees.

The solution that makes the most sense is a remote work arrangement because it reduces employer costs and allows employees to adjust their work schedule to their mental energy cycle. When a worker becomes mentally fatigued, they can go off the clock and engage in recharge activities that are personally productive like exercise or relaxation. When energy returns, the worker can start working again at a high level, effectively cutting out the low productivity period of the cycle. Employers don’t pay for unproductive time and employees get to work in a more natural pattern that adjusts to their personal lives.

Why isn’t everyone doing this already? Many workers already are, and as commutes get worse and communications improve, the number will continue to increase. Of course there will always be a need for office workers in businesses (like doctor’s offices and law firms) that require daily customer interaction, but for most companies it really isn’t necessary.

There is also the argument that people need to collaborate in person. This is steadily becoming less essential. Most office communications are already done through email or instant messager. Face to face meetings are certainly necessary, but for the vast majority of lower and mid level employees meetings are the exception and could be conducted via phone/video conference or condensed into one or two days a week.

Another common objection is that employees will abuse remote work arrangements by slacking off. I’m inclined to believe that most adults value their employment enough that this isn’t a problem. In cases where supervision is required, web cams and other technology can used to monitor a worker.

I suspect the real reason remote work arrangements are still the exception is inertia. Companies are used to doing business in the office and are reluctant to change. There is also the presence of office politics. If one person is given a remote arrangement, jealous employees will complain. Doesn’t it make sense to give everyone what they want and save a boat load of cash on office space?

I may only be a kid in his 20’s, but I can tell when something just makes sense. I perceive an increasing number of people are noticing the same phenomena. Forty years from now we’ll be telling our grandchildren about the olden days when everyone’s mommy and daddy went to work in an office.

Massage and body treatments are a lot more enjoyable if you are properly prepared. Massage etiquette applies to any type of spa services, from facials to pedicures, and it will ensure that you get quality service while remaining comfortable and relaxed. Most spa etiquette tips are common sense, but some are uniquely adapted to the spa environment.

Before your massage or spa treatment, make sure that you book an appointment at a time which is convenient for you. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early, and make sure that you do not need to rush off after your appointment to another destination. Make sure to ask about the spa’s cancellation policy, and be specific about what you want. If you want a 90 minute deep tissue massage, for example say that you want a 90 minute deep tissue, rather than “a massage.” If you are booking a spa treatment, ask about available treatments and how long they generally take. After you have made your appointment, ask the receptionist to confirm the date, time, and service with you.

On the day of your massage or spa treatment, make sure to shower and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Being clean is an important part of massage etiquette, since your massage therapist is going to be handling your body. If an area of your body such as your feet is especially dirty, the massage therapist may skip it, and that could make your massage less enjoyable. You should also take off your jewelry, as it can interfere with a massage. Always turn off cell phones, pagers, and other digital devices before entering a spa; this basic massage etiquette makes your session more comfortable and ensures that other spa clients are not disturbed.

When you arrive at a spa, you may be asked to fill out a spa intake form, unless you are a repeat client. This form asks you to disclose medical conditions and concerns which you want the spa to be aware of, and it is a good idea to be honest about allergies and underlying medical conditions such as heart problems or asthma. You will not be denied service on the basis of a medical condition, unless the spa feels that the service you have booked may be dangerous for you, and information on spa intake forms is kept secured because of its sensitive nature.

When you meet your massage therapist, it is a good idea to go over your expectations for the massage. If you have areas which you want the massage therapist to address, request that he or she focus on them, and do not be afraid to talk about any concerns you may have. Once you and the massage therapist have talked about what to expect during the session, you will be asked to step onto the table or floor mat which will be used for the session. If you need to undress, the massage therapist will step out for a moment to allow you to do so.

Clothing is often an issue in massage etiquette. Some types of massage such as Thai massage require loose, comfortable clothing, while others require the patient to undress, at least partially. You should always undress to your personal level of comfort. The massage therapist can usually offer the best massage if you are nude, but he or she can also adapt if you prefer to wear underwear or a bathing suit during the session. Whether you go naked or prefer to remain modest, you will be draped at all times during the massage.

During the massage, you may find that you get the most enjoyable experience by remaining silent, or you may prefer to chat. Express your preference to the therapist before hand. You should also provide feedback to your massage therapist; if you want him or her to go deeper or to work more in a certain area, for example, express it. At the end of the massage, the therapist will step out to allow you to collect yourself, usually telling you to “take your time” getting off the table; interpret this as taking a few minutes, not stretching out for a half hour nap.
